Introduction:


  1. Complete the 24.1 note outline by opening the key below and filling in missing blanks/drawings or making corrections - refer to textbook section 24.1 for source.
  2. Preview the following videos:
  3. Obtain and complete the 24.1 Calculating Frequency and Wavelength worksheet from the side table (below the clock), a calculator, and complete both sides. Use your notes, and textbook for additional help. Finish for homework if you do not finish in class!
  4. If you complete the 24.1 Calculating Frequency and Wavelength worksheet (both sides), obtain a the Spectral Analysis 1 worksheet and the half sheet of wavelength data from the side table. On this worksheet, you will be analyzing the observed wavelength data (from the worksheet) and comparing that data to the known data (half sheet) for various elements, and determining the following for each example (4 on each side!):
    • From this comparison, you can determine which element is present in the observed light source (look for an equal change, either positive or negative, between the 4 wavelength values of the known and observed data). See example 1.
    • Determine the relative motion of the source (either away or towards the observer: consider the Doppler Effect and the change in wavelength of the observed data (worksheet) as compared to the known data (half sheet).
    • Determine the physical conditions of the source: consider what produces an absorption spectrum vs. what produces an emission spectrum. Spectra like that of example 1 are absorption spectra, those draw on the worksheet like example 2 are emission spectra.
    • Use the Doppler Shift Formula to determine the velocity of the source in km/s - see your notes for the formula. IMPORTANT: use the low wavelength value from the known data (half sheet) for the value in the denominator! See example 1.

1. Read pgs. 674-677 and complete:
  1. Cornell Notes on this section (24.1)
  2. Answer the section review questions #'s 1-6 in your notebooks

2. Complete the Starlight Spectroscopy Online Investigation neatly numbering and answering all questions in your notebook.

3. Preview the 24.1 note outline, filling in (using a pencil) any blanks you can prior to the note outline lecture.
